Echoes a Best of Pink Floyd Review
This is the title of a play on words / humor of Pink Floyd. Echoes being one of their most well known tracks
from the album Meddle in Pink Floyd's catalog. Echoes meaning the repeat of the past.
The track listing has been selected from most of their officially released albums. So if you are new to Pink
Floyd this is a great way to get to know there music.
Of course nothing is better then getting the original albums in there entirety and if you go to which
albums to buy then you really will get to appreciate Pink
Floyd.
Nearly all there albums have a concept anyway so by just listening to the odd tracks here and there you really
are not getting the full story.
Ok so you have decided to investigate Echoes of Pink Floyd. Its not a bad best of album covering there full car
rear. So....
The 1st track is called Astronomy Domine.
Written by Syd Barrett who wrote all of the music at this time. It appears as the first track on Pink Floyd s
first album called Piper at the Gates of Dawn.
Track 2 See Emily Play. This was Pink Floyd s second single which charted in the US and
UK in 1967 and is installed in the Rock n Roll hall of fame as one of the greatest Rock n Roll songs that shaped
music. Again written by Syd Barrett, its a psychedelic commercial pop song with a strong melody.
Track 3 The Happiest days of our lives. A bit surprising this track was included. It
comes from Pink Floyd's The Wall album. I guess this was put in as a prequel to...
Track 4 Another Brick in the Wall (Part 2) This was a Christmas No1 in the UK and
the US in 1979. It isn't your usual Christmas hit. Ok it does have children singing on it.
Track 5 Echoes.Where the title of the album comes from. This tune appears on the Meddle
album which was released in 1971. When it was released on vinyl it took over the 2nd side as it
is 23 mins long. It starts off with Rick Wright playing one note and the song develops from this. In fact this
is how the song became composed. Rick one day starts playing this one note and Roger and Dave and Rick wrote the
rest of it. It has been used on a surfing film called Crystal Voyager and fits in
perfectly for a film dealing with surfing.
Also If you play it on the last 23 minutes of the film 2001 Space Odyssey it fits in beautifully. Cosmic
man!
Track 6 Hey You comes from The Wall album but is not available on the The Wall soundtrack.
Track 7 Marooned. A rare instrumental track from Pink Floyd which won a Grammy award.
From the album Division Bell.
Track 8 The Great Gig in the Sky. From Dark side of the Moon it's written by Richard Wright. Often used for funerals. Listen and
you will understand. Beautiful.
Track 9 Set the Controls for the Heart of the Sun is a early Roger Waters song.
Taken from a
Saucerful of Secrets and a different version on Ummagumma. It also features in the film Pink Floyd live at Pompeii.
Track 10 Money. This has to be one of the most well known tracks from Pink Floyd. It
opens side 2 on
Dark Side of the Moon and using the sound of money being thrown into a till and repeated
give the song its original beat. Released as a single in the US.
Track 11 Keep Talking is from the first Pink Floyd Album without Roger Waters called
Momentary Lapse of Reason . Another great song written by David Gilmour and featuring
Stephen Hawking's voice to make the point of people not communicating.
Track 12 Sheep. The album Animals from where this track is taken from is not the best Pink Floyd album. But it does
have its moments like Sheep.
Track 13 Sorrow The last track from
A Momentary Lapse of Reason.
