Released in1973 this album went on to be Pink Floyds biggest selling album selling over 45
million copies. It is an amazing album. Very few albums you can listen to over again and still hear something
you didn’t hear before.
It may be the voices or the instruments or the sound effects but whatever it is every time you
hear Dark side of the Moon its as fresh today as it was in 1973.
History of the Album
Pink Floyd had been experimenting and recording pieces for this album when they received the
call from to do the soundtrack to
Obscured by Clouds. So they shunted off to France locked themselves up and 2 weeks later completed the
soundtrack to this waste of time film.
If you have followed Pink Floyd logically from the beginning then you will see that Meddle is
like the fore runner to Dark side of the moon.
Watching live in Pompeii shows you clip of the group playing and rehearsing Dark Side of the
Moon.
Of course it was not only the group who made it a brilliant album but credit must be given to
the engineer on the Project, one Alan Parsons who went on to become The Alan Parson Project. His intelligent
engineering give Dark side of the Moon that detailed sound, the clear and clarity sound enables the listener
to wallow in the whole concept of this album.
When it was released it hit the No1 position in the US and No 5 in the UK. It stayed in the
top 200 best sellers chart for741 weeks 1973 -1988 which in its self is a record. Not even Presley or the
Beatles could do that.
One reason it sold so well at the time of its release was because people used it to set up
there stereo sound systems. Play it loud and you’ll understand
The sleeve simple but never the less striking and unforgettable with its
black back ground and prism was designed by Designers Storm Thorgerson and Aubrey Powell
It starts off with a heartbeat and finishes with a heart beat blended mixed into the whole
album are various voices recorded especially for the album by Roger and Dave. They simply went round asking
people they met in the studio what they thought of life, death, madness etc.
Money has a unique time signature with a sound of a cashier opening and closing a till
drawer.
Written mostly by Roger Waters but with heavily influenced by the other members of the groups
writings. The songs range from birth, death, greed, madness and time, themes often found in Pink Floyd
Albums.
Yes some of the lyrics can be a bit immature but most are very clever and observant of
life then and even now.
For example from
Money
Money, get away get a good job with more pay and you're O.K. money, it's a gas grab that cash with both hands and make a stash new car, caviar, four star daydream think I'll buy me a football team
And from,
Time
Every year is getting shorter
Never seem to find the time
Plans that either come to nought
Or half a page of scribbled lines
Hanging on in quiet desparation is the English way
The time is gone
The words said by unknown when asked what he thought of maddness.
"I've been mad for fucking years, absolutely years, been
over the edge for yonks, been working me buns off for bands..."
"I've always been mad, I know I've been mad, like the
most of us...very hard to explain why you're mad, even
if you're not mad..."

5 The Great Gig in the Sky
A song written by Richard Wright,
well a song with out lyrics but instead a beautiful wailing from
Clare Torry who became know as the great gig in the sky singer
“When I was a child
I caught a fleeting glimpse
Out of the corner of my eye.
I turned to look but it was gone
I cannot put my finger on it now
The child is grown,
The dream is gone.
I have become comfortably numb.”
“Hey you, out there in the cold
Getting lonely, getting old
Can you feel me?
Hey you, standing in the aisles
With itchy feet and fading smiles
Can you feel me?
Hey you, dont help them to bury the light
Don't give in without a fight.”
“Strangers passing in the street
By chance two separate glances meet
And I am you and what I see is me.
And do I take you by the hand
And lead you through the land
And help me understand
The best I can”
"And then one day you find
Ten years have got behind you
No one told you when to run
You missed the starting gun"
"Long you live and high you fly
Smiles you'll give and tears you'll cry
All you touch and all you see
Is all your life will ever be.
