Piper at the Gates of Dawn
Pink Floyds debut album, Piper at the Gates of Dawn, released in August 1967 and is the only Pink
Floyd album under Syd Barretts leadership.
The genre of music would be today described as Psychedelic rock and space rock.
The title Piper at the Gates of Dawn comes from a book by Kenneth Graham called Wind in the
Willows.
EMI released the album in mono as well as stereo. If you have a very good condition of Piper at
the Gates of Dawn in Mono then its worth decent money.
Piper at the Gates of Dawn has eleven tracks but strangly enough does not contain the two hit
singles, Arnold Lane and See Emily play. For these two tracks see Relics.
Piper at the Gates of Dawn was being recorded at the same time in Abbey Road studios as the
Beatles Sgt Pepper album. It was produced by Abbey Roads engineer Norman Smith who, as you can imagine hadn't a
clue what Pink Floyd was all about haveing been used to producing middle of the road acts like Matt Monroe Peter
Sellers etc. Neveless he did a great job considering.
Piper at the Gates of Dawn received good reviews when it was released and has since been
considered one of the most influential albums of all time by many of the top music magazines including Q and
Rolling Stone.
