Saucerful of Secrets
Saucerful of Secrets is the second album released by Pink Floyd in 1969.
It sold reasonably well in the UK but not so well in the US. Mainly because for most
tastes at the time its was a bit off the wall so to speak. Saucerful of secrets is the last album that Syd Barrett
recorded on. The one and only track Jug band Blues. All the other songs were written by the rest of the group
individually and together.
Its a rare album as it is the only album that all five members sing lead
vocals.
It was recorded in 1967 -1968 and was particularly difficult time for all members of
Pink Floyd as Syd Barrett had began loosing his mental stability. In fact it became so bad one day the rest of the
group just didn't pick him up from his flat to go to a gig and that was the last of Syd in Pink Floyd.
Saucerful of secrets is the only Pink Floyd album, part from compilations, to feature
all five members. Roger Waters, David Gilmour, Syd Barrett. Nick Mason, Richard Wright.
Track Listing
1 Let there be more light
Written by Roger Waters sung by Roger Waters and
David Gilmour.
Apparently in the song there is a line that says, "For there revealed into glowing
robes which Lucy into the sky" is a joking reference to Lucy in the Sky with diamonds by the Beatles.
2 Remember a Day
Written by Richard Wright, in fact it is his first effort of writing. Its happy go
lucky , I haven't got a care in the world type of song and certainly not one of the best Pink Floyd song but still
lovely.
After Richard Wrights death it was performed for the first time live on the Jools
Holland show by David Gilmour.
3 Set the controls for the heart of the Sun.
A Roger Waters song, in fact its his first song that he wrote. The title is taken
from a Michael Moorcock book entitled Fireclown.
Acording to David Gilmour Set the Controls for the heart of
the Sun is the only track that all five members of Pink Floyd played on.
4 Corporal Clegg
Again written by Roger Waters. The name came from the man who invented the
Kazoo hence the Kazoos playing on the end. Roger admits the song is about his Dad ( the first of many references to
WW11 and his Dad in his song writing) and that having a wooden leg for a trophy is being cynical against war.
5 A Saucerful of Secrets
A group composition. Starts of weird experimenting sounds from there various
instruments and ending up as a quite mood with Gilmour doing the vocals which consist of Aaaah. It reaches a
crescendo before finishing. The group experimenting a bit I think.
6 See Saw
See Saw is the second song by Richard Wright. He
tried to write in the style of Syd Barrett .. from a child's point of view. Apparently the lyrics are to do with
Richards sister when they were young and played on a See Saw
7 Jugband Blues
Syd Barrett's last song for Pink Floyd which is about Barrett's self-diagnosis of
schizophrenia, explained by the lines "I'm most obliged to you for making it clear that I'm not here" and "I wonder
who could be writing this song?"
Very sad really.
