Recorded in January – March and May –July 1975 at Abbey Road Studios. Released in September
1975.
In September 1976 nearly two and half years after Dark Side of the Moon Pink Floyd released
Wish you were here. Its not often that any group can release a album which is as good if not better then it s
predecessor.
After the huge success of Dark side of the Moon it took a while for the group to come up with
new ideas for a new album. Roger Waters had written bits but the group were exhausted from touring and going
from a fairly well known group to Super Stardom across the US and even UK which DSM had made them. They
needed to rest as the strain began to show not only within the group but also their personal relationships.
So at the beginning of 1974 they took a break and when they met up again in January 1975 to record wish you
were here the group had changed. They were famous and rich and all their dreams had sort of come true. Most
of the group didn’t want to be in the studio in fact they wish they weren’t here. The recording sessions
became very difficult while trying to record and having tours to interrupt these sessions didn’t help. The
original plan was to have Shine on you crazy Diamond on side 1 and Raving and drooling and “you gotta to be
crazy, two new songs on the other side
.
In the end Roger Waters took control and suggested they drop these last 2 tracks in favour of
others giving the album a concept, the concept being absence. Apart from David Gilmour the others agreed and
with this change in direction 3 more songs were written. Welcome to the machine, Wish you were here and Have
a cigar.
Roger Waters was becoming the main creative power and this was being proved by his writing of
the lyrics and most of the medleys. With his repeated themes of insanity, absence, alienation and specific
reference to Syd Barret the original member who was sacked because of his erratic behaviour caused by
drugs.

This is of course to do with Syd Barrett. A 26 minute epic track.
Welcome to the Machine
A song about the way the record business chews up and spits out the vulnerable
artist.
Have a cigar
Inspired with a dry sense of humour this Roger Waters track is about the record company’s and
PR people etc. The great line in the song says:
“The band is really great that’s what I really think.
Oh by the way which ones Pink”
The main vocals are sung by Roy Harper who is a hero to the members of Pink Floyd.
This question was constantly asked by the press etc who knew nothing of the group.
Wish you were here
A rare song from roger waters in as much the lyrics were written a long time before the tune.
Usually with Roger it’s the other way round.

During the mixing of this track a man appeared in uninvited in the studio. The group didn’t at
first recognize that it was Syd Barret. He chatted for awhile before disappearing and that was the last time
any of the group saw him.
The album went on to sell 20 million plus and is considered by Rolling Stone Magazine to be
209 in the top 500 best albums of all time.
“When I was a child
I caught a fleeting glimpse
Out of the corner of my eye.
I turned to look but it was gone
I cannot put my finger on it now
The child is grown,
The dream is gone.
I have become comfortably numb.”
“Hey you, out there in the cold
Getting lonely, getting old
Can you feel me?
Hey you, standing in the aisles
With itchy feet and fading smiles
Can you feel me?
Hey you, dont help them to bury the light
Don't give in without a fight.”
“Strangers passing in the street
By chance two separate glances meet
And I am you and what I see is me.
And do I take you by the hand
And lead you through the land
And help me understand
The best I can”
"And then one day you find
Ten years have got behind you
No one told you when to run
You missed the starting gun"
"Long you live and high you fly
Smiles you'll give and tears you'll cry
All you touch and all you see
Is all your life will ever be.
