Which Pink Floyd Album do I buy
So which Album/CD do I buy of Pink Floyd?
Well Pink Floyd music is in three parts.
The first part is the beginning of Pink Floyd. Syd Barrett was the main write who also gave the name of Pink Floyd.
These names were from two fairly unknown blues men, Pink Anderson and Floyd Council. He wrote the two hit singles
Arnold Lane and See Emily play but only recorded with Pink Floyd two Albums. Piper at the Gates of Dawn and
Saucerful of Secrets. The latter Syd is only on some of the tracks as Dave Gilmour had replaced him due to the fact
that Syd Barrett was becoming unreliable due to taking too much LSD.
So from this era get Piper at the Gates of Dawn.
Part two of Pink Floyd followed and without a doubt the most popular album is Dark Side of the Moon. In the US
album chart for nearly 800 weeks, yes 800 weeks, it’s generally recognized as a brilliant album not only for its
subject matter but also for the tunes and the excellent Alan Parson production.
Many people however prefer Wish you were here which is the follow up album to Dark side of the moon. It has one of
the longest introductions to a song at nearly 9 minutes. A fascination fact of this Album, apart from it sold
millions , is that while the Floyd were mixing the track Shine on you crazy diamond which was written about their
ex band mate Syd Barrett.A mysterious figure appeared in the studio. It was of course Syd unrecognisable because of
excess weight and hair all cut off. When approached he ran off. This was the last time the group saw him.
Then you have The Wall. A double album which spawned a major Christmas hit Another brick in the wall. A jaw
dropping concert tour where on stage was built a 30' wall which comes crashing down at the end of the
concert.
So you have a choice of 3 albums. In order I would choose Dark side of the Moon followed by The Wall then Wish you
were here. But whichever you choose you can't go wrong as they are all three brilliant.
The next best album from this period is Meddle with its 20 min Echoes which is again a brilliant beautiful haunting
piece.
Followed by Final Cut, Animals, Atom Heart Mother, More, Obscured by Clouds, Ummagumma.
In the third part of Pink Floyd there are only two albums to choose from Momentary Lapse of Reason and Division
Bell.
I personally prefer the latter only because I prefer the tunes.
So there we are a guide of what to buy of Pink Floyd music.
If you do not want to buy the full albums then you could do worse by purchasing Relics and early Best of to
represent the first part of Pink Floyd and Echoes for the second and Pulse for a idea of how great they were live
as well.
